Building Accessibility into Open Source, One Practical Step at a Time

Talk by Maria LamardoPart of All Things Open 2026

Duration
Raleigh Convention Center, Raleigh, NC

Open source projects want to improve accessibility, but many do not know where to start. In this talk, we introduce the Open Source Accessibility Framework, a practical phased approach that helps projects build accessibility into their documentation, workflows, testing, and community practices over time.

Instead of treating accessibility as a final checklist or a one-time effort, the framework helps teams make progress in realistic, public, and sustainable steps. The talk shares the four phases of the framework, explain how projects can start with foundational actions, and show how accessibility work can become part of everyday contribution and maintenance.

For maintainers, contributors, and advocates who want a clear path to integrating accessibility into open source work without feeling overwhelmed.
